It was the first time in a long time that I was reminded of the potential an outdoor space offers, and it was one of the first projects we tackled to transform a bare concrete pad into an outdoor oasis.

The good news is, if we did it, you can too. With a few thoughtful touches, you can create your own outdoor sanctuary.

Here’s how:

1. Decide your vibe

Before you begin investing in furniture or planting a jungle, think about how you want to feel when you’re outside. At this stage, you can start to consider some of the primary functions of the space, and we’ll get into this even more in step two.

For now, imagine you’re opening the door and heading outside. You have your favorite drink. It’s the perfect temperature.

How do you imagine your outdoor living space making you feel?

• Cozy, comfortable, and secluded?

• Spacious, open, and breezy?

• Is it functional or luxurious?

• Organic or rigid?

For me, it was all about creating an extension of our interior living space, bringing the indoors out.

I wanted it to feel lived-in and relaxed, organic with soft textures, cozy with warm lighting, and with special details that brought out our personality. I wanted it to feel like somewhere I’d want to sit and sip a cup of coffee, just as much as somewhere you’d want to hang out on a Friday night.

So, whether you’re aiming for a coastal deck retreat, a boho backyard lounge, or a modern outdoor sanctuary, deciding your vibe will help guide every decision.

A few examples that may inspire you:

2. Create intentional zones

Even if you’re working with a small space, breaking it into “zones” can make it feel bigger and more functional.

In our case, we’re gifted with an outdoor space that rivals the size of our indoor footprint, and I wanted to take advantage of every inch, treating it as if it were an addition to a house. My goal was to include a space to dine, a space to cuddle up and watch a game, a zone ready for entertaining, and a corner that felt like a bit of a sanctuary where we could unplug.

Consider how you’ll plan to use the space, your desired outcomes, and if there are any specific needs you’ll want to accommodate for those using the space.

Potential zones to consider creating in your outdoor living space:

• Dining area: A teak, concrete, or glass table with outdoor chairs provides flexible dining options

• Bistro corner: A small foldable or iron bistro table with two chairs offers the perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or afternoon apps

• Lounge area: Depending on the size of the space, a sectional, or comfy outdoor chair with a rug and tables can bring your living room outdoors

• Grill station: You could build an entire outdoor kitchen complete with a fridge and plumbing, or carve out space for a simple food prep surface and your favorite grill

• Plant sanctuary: From pollinator-friendly to ornamental plants, you may consider creating a dedicated space that favors growing conditions

• Zen zone: A fountain, swing, or cozy hanging chair with outdoor pillows can create the perfect retreat to enjoy peaceful moments

Tip: Once you decide on the zones to include, sketching the plan on paper can offer perspective on the flow between zones and overall sizing of the space.

3. Layer it on

What is the key to making your patio feel like a retreat? Layers. Layers automatically make any space feel lived-in and well-loved, and your patio is no exception.

A few ways you can add layers to your patio design:

• Textiles: Outdoor cushions (including dining chair seating cushions, sectionals, benches, etc.), outdoor rugs, welcome mats, outdoor throw pillows and blankets, and even tablecloths. Weather-resistant textiles are key for day-to-day use, but that shouldn’t stop you from bringing out indoor pieces for special occasions, too.

• Lighting: From string lights to overhead basket lights, pulling a variety of lighting options into your outdoor space will add warm, glowy magic for the coziest of nights. Additional options include solar lanterns, battery-powered candles, and landscape lighting.

• Shade: Consider adding large outdoor umbrellas or sail shades over otherwise uncovered seating areas, or outdoor fabric strips woven into the roof of a pergola. Not only are they functional, but they add visual interest.

4. Make it personal

This is where the magic happens. In many design-inspired posts, I often reference one of my favorite quotes about personalizing our living space, from Sam Gosling, who shares, ‘As humans, being understood is one of the most prioritized subconscious needs, so we decorate our homes to reflect the self.’ As a maximalist and someone who values being seen for who they are, this has quickly become my mantra.

When personalizing a space, consider how elements inspire your senses.

• Touch: Add natural elements like wicker, teak, and bamboo to add texture and warmth with an organic feel to your outdoor space

• Sight: Create interest with color and pattern, like thrifted saucers for your plants, vintage trays, suncatchers, or climbing plants up a trellis

• Smell: Pots of citronella, rosemary, and jasmine offer both beauty and function, deterring pests, and you could consider fragrant plants, lavender, or herbs

• Taste: Evoke taste through other sensory cues like creating a cozy coffee zone, creating a custom drink or tasting experience, or adding pots of edible flowers

• Sound: Display windchimes or a fountain to offer relaxing tones, or create a custom playlist to enjoy over outdoor speakers

The Gallery Wall Guide (Fit for Rvs)

As we continue settling into our new RV, I have been slowly adding personal touches throughout it to help it feel more like home. I’m excited to share my most recent project that I finished - our new gallery wall. 

After being on the road, traveling full-time in our RV for over 3 years, you can imagine how many photos we’ve taken with all of the memories we’ve made. There’s just one problem…

Our new RV, while larger overall, has more windows and less wall space than our last one. This meant that after unpacking all of my frames from our first RV - I realized that most of them weren’t going to fit in this one. Luckily, I enjoy a challenge and an excuse to start with a clean slate. Our new Brinkley z3100 has a short, windowless, hallway going upstairs, and this made the perfect space for a travel gallery wall. 

Since sharing this project on our Instagram, we’ve received several questions about how to make a gallery wall, and especially how to make a gallery wall that is also RV friendly.

What is a Gallery Wall?

So what is the difference between a gallery wall and a wall of photos?

Technically, not much. By definition, a gallery wall is essentially a collection of framed artwork, photographs, and personal memories that are hung closely together in a grouping.

Visually, the primary difference might be that an intentionally planned gallery wall is typically planned in a way that the artwork itself creates some sort of focal point. This could be anything from a large piece of art that anchors the center point, to a clean line break carried the length of frames, just as an example.

5 Tips for Creating a Gallery Wall 

1 | Find the focal point for your gallery wall

Your focal point could vary depending on where your gallery wall will hang.

For example, in our case - the gallery wall is displayed on a wall approximately 7 feet tall by 4 and a half feet wide, so my focal point is central to this space by height and width.

On the other hand, if you were working with a long hallway you might opt for the focal point to be a centered line of photos that ran the length of the hall. Identifying the focal point of your gallery wall according to what your space allows, will help you choose the most appropriately-sized artwork.

2 | Curate a theme for your gallery wall (or don’t)

As with any home decor, the more reflective it is of your personal style, the more satisfied you will be with the results, and the more like home it will feel. You do not need to over-index on creating a theme for your gallery wall, but as a guideline, it can help you to narrow down elements that work well together.

For example, you might consider doing a gallery wall of family photos, vintage posters, a variety of art types all in different, bold-colored frames, photos from your travels, or a mix of everything in between.

Where you are mixing different styles, it is best to create balance by repeating each one 2-3 times throughout your gallery wall layout.

There are no hard and fast rules for curating your collection, but finding points of commonality will help to tie it together.

3 | Choose gallery wall frames

When it comes to our own RV decor, I prefer to blend decor styles together to help create more of a “lived-in” feel. So when it came to creating our gallery wall, I knew that I wanted to use a variety of art types to make it feel like pieces I had collected over time. I also wanted to add a bit of a modern touch, so I used sleek, black frames for all of the pictures.

If you plan to use a blend of frames, it’s typically best to choose 2-3 different types, and then use each type 2-3 times in your gallery wall. For example, you might use gold ornate frames, aged wood frames, and bright-colored frames altogether. You would want to use 2-3 of each style of frame, spacing them out throughout the gallery wall design.

When creating a gallery wall, it's important to decide on the size of frames you want to use. This choice may be influenced by space limitations. For instance, I knew I wanted to work within a narrower space from left to right, so I chose frames that were taller and narrower, such as 11x17 and 12x18.

If I'm using frames larger than 11x14, I tend to avoid including any smaller than 8x8, as they can look haphazard or like an afterthought. Whether you're going for a perfectly symmetrical display or a more eclectic mix of frames, the size of your frames will play a key role in achieving your desired look. I find that choosing your frames is easiest once you have determined your focal point, and when you have identified the pieces you will be using in your collection.

4 | Plan the layout for your gallery wall

Before you begin hanging your gallery wall, I recommend planning your layout using a large open space like the floor, or a table. When placing the frames, you want to start with your focal point frames. If you are working frames in rows, you should start with the middle frames, and if you are working with a variety of frames, you would start with the larger focal point art and build outward. Visually, plan to balance colors, frame styles, or sizes and each time you add a frame to your layout, try to line it up with a previous frame to create clean line breaks.

Once you have your frames laid out to your liking, snap a picture with your phone or camera. This will be helpful once you start to hang the frames, so you can reference the layout as you go. You might think you will remember exactly how things were, but as you start to remove frames from the layout it can become confusing.

5 | Measure twice, hang your gallery wall once

When you are ready to hang your art, you should start with the focal point art first, ensuring that any frames that will be placed above, below, or to the sides will fit in the space where you are planning.

Check to make sure your frames are level as you hang each one, and use a measuring tape to keep spacing consistent between them. Step back and assess the progress often, because it can look very different from varying points of view.

TIP: To assist with the placement of photo hangers, you can apply a strip of masking tape to the back of the frame, and mark where the hanger is with a pen or pencil. Take that same strip of masking tape and apply it to the wall where you plan to hang the frame, and you can add the nail or hanger to the marked spot and then remove the tape.

Gallery Wall Supplies (that are also RV friendly)

RV decor must always take into account weight and mobility. Every RVer needs to be concerned about cargo weight since even the smallest items, from clothing to a soda can, can add up over time.

To help maintain the weight of our decor, I prefer using frames made of lightweight materials like plastic instead of glass. When searching for 'poster frames', I usually come across some great options for such frames. Opting for lightweight frames also makes it easier to prepare for travel days, because they are easier to secure in place, so we don’t have to take them down each time.

Command Strips to Hang Gallery Wall Frames in an RV

When it comes to RV decor and mounting picture frames in an RV, we highly recommend Command Velcro Strips. There are several different types of Command Strips, but the Velcro strips seem to hold up the best when it comes to bumpy roads.

I like to spread the strips out depending on the size and weight of the frame, to help offset how much weight will be “pulling” at any one spot. Oftentimes I will use 4 strips, one on every side of the frame, or for larger frames 11 inches and up, I will use two on each longer side and one on each of the shorter sides.

There is something both satisfying and assuring when you hear the sound of Velcro clicking together as you mount the frame to the wall.

Know This: If you have peel-and-stick wallpaper in your RV, it is important that you let it cure for at least 2-3 days before adding any weight to it (like from picture frames hanging by Command Strips that are attached to the paper).

Once you mount a frame with Command Strips to peel and stick wallpaper, you want to avoid moving it around for at least 2-3 days. If, after 2-3 days you need to move it, it’s best to use something to apply pressure towards the strip attached to the wallpaper, as you pull the frame away from it. This will reduce any pull on the paper that could cause it to come away from the wall.

How to Hang Pictures in an RV

One of the questions we’re asked most is: How do you hang pictures in an RV?

This was one of the first issues we faced moving into our RV full-time. It was important to us to display pictures in our RV and to surround ourselves with sentimental memories. Additionally, we have created several gallery walls in our RV, and in general, wall hangings and pictures are an element of our RV decor that we simply just enjoy.

While there may not be a one-size-fits-all answer, our solution is easy and has worked for us for over three years of RV living and travel.

When it comes to hanging pictures in an RV, there are two primary methods. In this post, we share both options to display frames in an RV, and we will share the list of tried and true supplies that we use.

Two Ways to Hang Pictures in an RV

When it comes down to it, there are two basic options to hang your pictures in an RV.

1: Using Adhesive or Velcro strips

2: Using traditional methods, combined with Adhesive or Velcro

But why would you combine the two? Trust us, read on.

1 | Using Adhesive or Command Velcro strips to hang pictures in an RV

One of the easiest methods that most RVers swear by to hang pictures in an RV is to use adhesive or Command strips.

Our personal preference: Command Velcro strips.

What I like about Command Velcro strips is that you can literally hear the strips as they’re connecting together.

Pros of Command Velcro strips:

• Damage-Free: Strips are removable, and when used properly, they do not cause permanent damage

• Come in various sizes to support a variety of weights

Cons of Command Velcro strips:

• Cost: If you like to hang pictures in your RV like we do, the cost of using Command strips can add up quickly

• Not the best solution for heavier frames or wall hangings

Tips for Using Command Velcro Strips to Hang Pictures in an RV

Two tips that I have learned from using Command Velcro strips to hang RV decor and picture frames:

1. Use multiple strips: My personal preference is to use one strip on all four sides of the frame. (1 - top, 1 - bottom, 1 - left side, 1 - right side). For heavier or larger frames, you may want to use 2 on each side.

2. Cut to size: For narrow or thin frames, I will cut the strip lengthwise down the middle. When doing this, I typically increase the number of strips used overall. This way, I am balancing the overall supported weight.

   Bonus: If you are hanging pictures over peel-and-stick wallpaper in an RV, you will want to allow for additional cure time. I apply the Command strips at least 2 days before I add the weight of the decor. Once it is installed, I do not move the frame or decor for at least 2 more days. This will help reduce the chance of the peel-and-stick wallpaper pulling away from the wall.

Additional adhesive options to consider:

Aside from Command Velcro strips, there are several other Command products to consider, in addition to mounting tape or museum putty. We personally have not used museum putty in our own RV decor, but have heard that it can be useful for very lightweight decor, like posters. We have used these other adhesives; however, they can be a bit more difficult to remove than the Velcro.

2 | Using nails or hardware to hang pictures in an RV

This second method is one that we try to avoid at all costs, but depending on your specific needs, sometimes it is unavoidable. RV walls are notoriously mysterious. They are thinner than normal residential walls. They don’t have the same series of expected studs or framing, and they are likely housing a lot of wires, pipes, and ducting in a very condensed space. The worst part is - if you make one wrong move or use a screw that is just this much too long, you could find yourself literally screwed. As in, finding the other end of the screw poking out the side of your RV.

So, if you absolutely have no other option other than to use a nail, screw, or anything that puts a hole in the wall of your RV, do so at your own risk. Note that depending on the make and model of your RV, you may be able to locate blueprints to find specifications for your walls, to help you decide where to hang RV decor.

Securing pictures and RV decor for travel day

Now, I mentioned that my second option was the traditional method with adhesive. Here’s the thing: If you hang pictures in an RV, you probably don’t want to add “take down photos and pack them away” to your departure day checklist.

So, if you choose to hang your RV decor with a nail or screw, we also recommend additionally securing them with Command Velcro strips. This will ensure that they don’t swing back and forth while you are driving, or come loose and fall off the wall completely. The nail may help offset the weight of heavier frames, but the Velcro can help hold it in place.

How to Choose Dishes for Your RV

When choosing the dishes for RV use, the most important things to consider are:

• Durability: RV dishes should be able to withstand bumpy roads, and be repeatedly packed away or sometimes stored in unusual climates. (ex. if your RV is kept in non-climate-controlled storage when not in use

• Care: Unless your RV is equipped with a dishwasher, you will likely be handwashing all dishes. There also may be times when you do not have access to water or sewer for thorough dishwashing

• Use: Depending on what RV life looks like for you, from roughing it to resorts, consider how you will be using your dishes. Should they be microwave safe?

• Sustainability: Paper plates and plastic cups may be useful without access to water hookups, but they aren’t the most sustainable option for long-term use

Durable Dishes for RV Use

The most common types of dishes that are safe for RV use will include:

• Melamine: made from a lightweight, durable, and heat-resistant material. Melamine dishes are very durable, which makes them a popular choice for RV and camping use

• Bamboo: typically created with a food-grade, non-toxic adhesive that adds another layer to their durability. Bamboo plates are long-lasting and sustainable

• Enamel: stainless steel dishes that are coated in enamel are incredibly durable. This can also make enamel camping dishes heavier than other options

• Corelle Ware: popular lightweight glass dishes that consist of a 3-ply laminate that makes them virtually unbreakable

The Thousand Trails family of campgrounds includes Encore RV Resorts and Destination Campgrounds, in addition to its core Thousand Trails campgrounds.

With over 50 years of experience offering family-oriented campgrounds, you can expect to find a variety of amenities and activities in campground locations ranging from secluded outdoors to popular tourist destinations.

While there are several different levels of Thousand Trails memberships that increase accessibility and make repeat visits more affordable, membership is not required to book a stay. However, the membership is very popular among full-time and recreational RVers alike, because it allows for fee-free nightly stays.

The primary benefit of a Thousand Trails Membership is the affordability and flexibility that comes with fee-free camping reservations. Depending on the level of membership and intended use, the benefits of being a member can quickly outweigh the cost.

So let’s talk membership options for Thousand Trails. First, I want to preface this with the fact that since we have had our own Thousand Trails Membership for the last 3+ years, there have been at least two changes to the available options. We can only imagine these changes have happened as a direct reflection of the ever-growing number of people getting into RV camping and their unique needs.

Because of this, and any potential changes to current offerings, we will focus on the highlights of each membership and the features that we see as the most important to consider.

Thousand Trails Membership Features that Matter

While there are several differences and incentives offered with each level of membership, the options that we consider to be the most impactful in helping you choose between them would include:

• Location Availability: Thousand Trails campgrounds are located in one of five regions, shown on the map above. Region availability varies between membership levels, and will likely be a significant factor in deciding which option is best for you.

• Advance Booking: Thousand Trails operates on a first-come, first-served basis for both campground reservations and site assignments. During peak seasons, or in popular destinations, availability in campgrounds can be limited.

  The advanced booking windows vary between membership levels and can significantly improve your experience.

• Days In / Out: To help alleviate network congestion and promote favorable availability, Thousand Trails campgrounds operate on regulated reservations for “days in” and “days out”. The standard number of days required varies with each level of membership and is subject to peak season restrictions.

  • Days In: Maximum number of days allotted for a single reservation

  • Days Out: Minimum number of days required between reservations (applies park to park)

    Example:

    14 days in = you can reserve and stay up to 14 days in a row before you would need to leave the park and start a new reservation

    7 days out = your next reservation cannot start until at least 7 days after your prior stay is completed

With changes to package offerings, benefits, and costs, the information below is subject to change and subject to individual contract details.

Trails Collection Add-On

The Trails Collection option is an add-on to any of the Thousand Trails Memberships below. This addition extends campground offerings to include Encore RV Resorts and Destination Campgrounds, increasing campground locations from 75+ to 200+, with prime resort destinations.

• Location Availability: 100+ RV Resorts and Campgrounds

• Advance Booking: 60 days

• Days In / Out: 14 days in / 7 days out

The Trails Collection Add-on is a great addition to any of the membership levels and gives you access to more exclusive resorts (ex. Key West, Florida), and to some age-restricted (55+) resorts in Arizona and Texas. Additionally, the Destination Campgrounds offer more unique camping experiences and outdoor activities.

Cost in 2023: $370 annually

Thousand Trails Camping Pass

An introductory-level membership that allows you up to 14 days of camping with no nightly fee at a time.

• Location Availability: Choose any one region (1 of 5)

• Advance Booking: 60 days

• Days In / Out: 14 days in / 7 days out

The Camping Pass is a great way to test if Thousand Trails is right for you. With an annual renewal, you won’t be locked into membership fees and there is no commitment to renew (check your contract for automatic renewal details).

Cost in 2025: $755 per year, plus $125 per additional zone

Thousand Trails Escape Membership

New in 2023, the Escape Membership level offers more flexibility in regional selections and an increased booking window over the Camping Pass.

For an additional fee, you can add additional regions to your plan (up to four), making it a great way to explore beyond your immediate area.

• Location Availability: Choose one to four regions (additional costs apply)

• Advance Booking: 90 days

• Days In / Out: 14 days in / 7 days out

The Escape Membership would be particularly beneficial for those who regularly travel between one to two zones or take longer camping trips throughout the year. The increased booking window is advantageous with a full 30-day lead time above Camping Pass members. During peak seasons, this could be the difference in getting a reservation or not.

This level of membership also includes membership dues. This is an annual fee that must be met each year to maintain membership, in addition to the cost of the package. These fees could range from $450-670+ a year (as of 2023), but freeze at age 62.

Cost in 2023: $2,995 (1 zone), $4,995 (2 zones), $5,995 (3 zones), and $6,995 (4 zones), plus annual dues.

Thousand Trails Elite Basic Membership

The Elite Basic level of membership unlocks even greater potential, with an increased booking window, longer reservations, and the ability to travel park-to-park with zero “days out”.

• Location Availability: Nationwide - includes all 5 regions

• Booking Window: 120 days

• Days In / Out: 21 days in / Park-to-Park

If you are a full-time RVer, or someone who travels long periods of time, the Elite Basic Membership can be incredibly valuable. You will have the ability to stay up to 21 nights with no nightly fees, and then move right to another Thousand Trails campground to stay up to an additional 21 nights, and so on.

Cost in 2023: $8,995, plus annual dues. A two-year commitment is required.

Thousand Trails Elite Connections Membership

Moving into the Elite Connections Membership, the park-to-park travel perk is maintained, and you also gain access to the best booking window of 180 days.

• Location Availability: Nationwide - includes all 5 regions

• Booking Window: 180 days

• Days In / Out: 21 days in / Park-to-Park

When it comes to comparing the Elite Basic and Elite Connections packages, the booking window is the biggest difference among the main features. However, several more detailed benefits include cabin and travel partner discounts through RPI Resort Connections.

Cost in 2023: $11,345, plus annual dues. A two-year commitment is required.

Thousand Trails Adventure Membership

Similar to the Elite Connections level of membership, the Adventure package offers more benefits in its additional vacation planning features and discounts. One standout benefit is the ability to upgrade to Trails Collection Plus, which unlocks all Trails Collection campgrounds AND increases both the booking window and days in / out benefits.

• Location Availability: Nationwide - includes all 5 regions

• Booking Window: 180 days

• Days In / Out: 21 days in / Park-to-Park

Personally, the value in the Adventure level membership over Elite Connections only seems beneficial with the PLUS package add-on.

Thousand Trails Collection PLUS

Trails Collection PLUS benefits include:

• Booking Window: 90 days vs. 60 days for Trail Collection campgrounds

• Days In Increased to 21 days vs. 14 for Trails Collection

• Days Out Increased to Park-to Park vs. 7 days out for Trails Collection

Cost in 2023: $17,595 (Adventure) + $670 annually (PLUS)

As you can see, the levels of Thousand Trails Memberships vary considerably with benefits and flexibility designed for all types of campers. It can be confusing to navigate all there is to be offered, especially once you include additional features like cabin rental discounts, transferability, and family sharing.

Which Thousand Trails Membership is Best?

I wish I had the magic answer to this, but only you can decide! With all of these options available, it really comes down to how you plan to use it.

Case in point:

Over 3+ years of travel, we’ve seen campsite costs ranging from $35 a night to well over $150 a night.

For us, knowing that we would be reserving campsites for 365 days a year, even at $35 a night, we would have spent over $12,000 in just one year alone.

This more than pays for the Elite Connections package and after year one, those nightly-fee-free campsites have paid for themselves.

How Thousand Trails Makes RV Life Possible for Us

Now that we’ve covered all of the basics of Thousand Trails, can you guess how it’s made RV life possible for us?

I mentioned at the start of this post that we were gifted with a Camping Pass as part of our RV purchase. This was the first time we had even heard of Thousand Trails. Upon researching, we were excited to learn that there was a Thousand Trails campground just 15 minutes from our house. We booked our first shakedown trip at the campground to check it out.

What we didn’t know was that after spending a week at this campground, it would end up becoming our home for the first seven months of RV living. While we talked at length about days in and out and nightly-fee-free stays, you should also know that many Thousand Trails campgrounds also offer extended stays for a monthly fee.

This actually helped us launch into full-time RV life because we were able to seamlessly transition from our home without leaving our “hometown”, allowing Eric to continue working. We had never considered starting RV life as stationary RVers, but we were so excited at the thought of living in our RV and starting a new adventure, that we decided to jump in.

Would it surprise you to know that RV lot rent is much cheaper than a mortgage? By moving into the campground for those seven months, we also saved enough money to support Eric’s even earlier retirement, allowing us to start our RV travel adventure six months earlier than planned.

Of course, the most impactful way that Thousand Trails has made RV life possible for us is through their memberships. I used the example above on how an Elite Connections Membership could pay for itself in just the first year, and we came pretty close! We ended up using 245 nights of Thousand Trails campgrounds in our first year of travel and maintained that average the following year, too. In 3 years, we’ve traveled to 21 states and we’ve more than made up the cost of our membership and saved thousands of dollars in campsite costs.

How to Hang Fall Garlands in an RV

When hanging garlands or similar RV decor, one of the most common solutions is to use Command Damage-Free Hanging products.

Tips for hanging RV decor with Command hooks:

1. Clean the area of application and allow it to dry completely

2. Following the directions on the package, install the Command hooks to your wall or window frame

3. Allow time for the adhesive to cure before adding weight

Dried orange slices are one of my favorite ways to include natural elements in my seasonal RV decor. Not only are they beautiful all on their own, they are also very versatile and can be used in garlands, potpourri, garnishes, centerpieces, and more. Given all of this, they still find even one more way to one-up themselves, and it’s their incredibly delicious scent.

To me, nothing says ‘holiday season’ like filling your home with nostalgic smells, and the process of drying orange slices tops the list.

Living in an RV can make otherwise everyday tasks a bit more challenging, and baking in your RV kitchen tends to be one of these. Making dried orange slices in a traditional residential setting can sometimes take patience as it is, but add in the challenges of tiny living appliances and space limitations, and it might seem impossible. However, I promise that it’s not.

How to make dried orange slices in your RV

When making dried orange slices in your RV, there are a few options. Two of the primary methods most RVers will have available to them will be drying orange slices in an oven or air drying orange slices.

Supplies needed:

• Oranges

• Sharp knife

• Cutting board

• Paper towels

• Parchment paper

• Baking sheet

• Cooling rack

• (Optional: mandolin slicer)

1 | Drying orange slices in an oven

Step One: Heat oven to 200 degrees, or the lowest temp possible for your oven. (Our RV oven’s lowest temperature is 300 degrees).

Wash and pat dry oranges, and slice into thin slices (about 1/4” or to your desired size) using a sharp knife or a mandolin slicer

Step Two: Place orange slices between sheets of paper towels, and press gently to remove excess moisture

Line your baking sheet with parchment paper, and lay the orange slices in a single layer

Step Three: Bake orange slices for 1-4 hours, flipping the orange slices over every 15-30 minutes and allowing steam to escape from the oven

Note: This is the part where your experience will greatly vary. Most directions for drying oranges in an oven will advise that you bake them at anywhere from 150-200 degrees and for 2 to 6 hours. Because our RV oven only goes as low as about 300 degrees, our orange slices bake much faster and are more prone to burning. You will want to monitor your orange slices throughout the process, removing any orange slices that appear to be dry more quickly than other slices, or if you start to see browning.

I also personally prefer to pull the orange slices out of the oven before they fully finish drying, and finish the process with air drying.

Step Four: As you remove orange slices from the oven, lay them in a single layer on a cooling rack and store in a cool, dry space until they finish drying completely

There are a few reasons why you might choose to air-dry orange slices instead of using an oven. In an RV, most ovens run on propane, and you may not want to have to leave it running for hours at a time. RV ovens are also often much smaller than residential ovens, requiring you to work in smaller batches.

Fortunately, there is a method to air dry orange slices so you can skip the oven altogether.

After slicing oranges and patting them to remove excess moisture, you can either:

• String the orange slices and hang them to dry

• Place in a single layer on the cooling rack, and allow to air dry

For either method, it will take 3-7 days for the orange slices to dry, depending on your environment

3 | Drying orange slices in a dehydrator

An additional method to dry orange slices is with a dehydrator. Not everyone who lives in an RV will have a dehydrator, but if you do have one, this may be the option that produces the most consistent results.

Following the same method to prepare the orange slices, instead of using the oven, you would follow the directions on your dehydrator for drying fruit slices.

How to store dried orange slices

Dried orange slices should be stored in an airtight container, in a cool, dark place. When dried and stored properly, dried orange slices can last up to two years.

Personally, I left an orange slice garland hanging in our RV kitchen window for over a year before storing it in an airtight container and using it the following holiday season.

How to use dried orange slices in RV decor

When it comes to using dried orange slices in RV decor, one of my favorite ways is to string them with twine to make garlands. There are several ways to string them, either through the middle of the orange slices, top to top, or individually hung. I like to add sprigs of dried herbs, lavender, or cinnamon sticks. Here are some of the ways that we’ve displayed dried orange slices in our own RV decor.

How long do pumpkins last?

Before you consider the tips for how to keep pumpkins from rotting, it’s important to have realistic expectations for the longevity of your pumpkin from the start. (Tips or not, you won’t magically add months to the lifespan of your precious pumpkin.)

Uncarved pumpkins: According to Farmer’s Almanac, you can expect an uncarved pumpkin to last anywhere from 1-3 months. When stored at room temperature, you can expect closer to 1 month, vs. 2-3 when stored in a cool, dark place.

Carved pumpkins: Once a pumpkin is carved, its longevity is greatly reduced. You can expect your jack o’lantern to last just up to one week.

3 Tips to Help Pumpkins Last Longer

1. Choose the right pumpkin from the start: Pumpkins from your local farm or field will be fresher than those shipped to the grocery store. When selecting your pumpkin, choose one that feels healthy, is void of any soft spots, and is without damage to its stem. Try not to hold the pumpkin by the stem, as this can cause breakage.

2. Give your pumpkin a bath: Wash pumpkins free from any dirt, mold-causing microbes, or other elements that could cause their surface to deteriorate. Two recommended methods include:

   Bleach and Water: Mix one part bleach to ten parts water in a large sink or bucket, and submerge your pumpkin for at least two minutes.

   Vinegar and Water: Mix one part vinegar to ten parts water in a large sink or bucket, and submerge pumpkins for 20-30 minutes.

   For both methods, rinse pumpkins and allow ample time to dry before placing them in the decor.

   Bonus: Make a spray using either solution and spritz pumpkins throughout the season to keep mold at bay.

3. Be cool, don’t be all uncool: Display pumpkins out of direct sunlight, and in shadier areas with cooler temperatures. Use battery-operated candles in carved pumpkins vs. open flames that add heat and cause deterioration.

4 Benefits of Using Styled Trays in Your RV Decor

Styled trays are not only visually appealing and fun to create, but this form of home decor also offers several benefits. Of course, I’ve already shared one benefit that I most appreciate about using styled trays is how easy it is to corral small items into one space, reducing overall clutter.

More reasons why you should use styled trays in your decor:

1. Protect surfaces: Using a styled tray can help protect surfaces throughout your home by creating a barrier between several objects or mixed materials and surfaces that could be scratched or stained. You can further protect the surfaces in your space by using felt feet on the underside of trays.

2. Easy to remove: Especially beneficial if you are decorating an RV, styled trays make it easy to pack away many items at one time. This is also useful in other situations that may include: using a styled tray for a special event, the holiday season, or as part of your daily routine.

3. Anchor or accent: Styled trays offer flexible decor solutions from anchoring a space to serving as an accent piece. From decorating a large space to a tiny home or RV decor, items that can serve multiple purposes are key, and styled trays are no exception. 7 Spaces Where a Styled Tray Makes Sense in Your RV Decor

Where should you put a styled tray, and what should you put on it?

1. Coffee Table or Console Table: A styled tray in your RV living room decor could be used to gather stacks of books, remote controls, accessories, framed photos, or plants

2. Dining Room Table: Styled trays can be used as part of your dining room table decor to gather vases of fresh-cut flowers, votives, cloth napkins, or decorative bottles

3. Nightstand: A small table can easily turn into a drop zone of clutter if not used intentionally. A styled tray placed next to your bed can provide organization for eyeglasses, books, a decorative alarm clock, or a water pitcher

4. Entryway: Similarly, the entryway of any home can become a drop zone for keys, purses, or dog leashes without storage. A styled tray in your entryway can help set the tone for how you wish this space to be used. In RV decor, you could use it to gather these items, and also flashlights or a decorative folder to file campsite documents

2. Functionality: When you live in an RV, you have to consider the weight and durability of anything you add to your decor. For that reason, I try to add some element of functionality to my RV decor when possible. With styled trays, I have used an ashtray as a trinket holder, and a vase as a toothbrush holder, etc.

   Before clicking ‘add to cart’ on any old option, consider this: Not all peel-and-stick wallpaper is made to the same standards.

You have several options when it comes to installing peel-and-stick wallpaper in an RV. With the smaller footprint, you may choose to use the same pattern throughout the entire RV or you may choose to only install peel-and-stick wallpaper on an accent wall. Regardless of which option you choose, sometimes starting with an accent wall is a good way to ease into the project, and it gives you flexibility to stop after just one wall, as well.

To help you choose the best accent wall to start with, here are a couple of things to consider:

• Typically, the wall that you usually see first when entering a room would be the best choice for an accent wall. In an RV, you may see every wall. A good rule of thumb is that in a longer room (or RV), you may choose the shorter, end wall vs. accenting the longer wall

• Accent walls are also usually a wall that has few to no interruptions, like doors or windows. This may be difficult in an RV, but choosing one with fewer obstacles, or a centrally placed object, would be a good compromise

• Lastly, choosing a wall that is symmetrical or that you can create symmetry with decor or patterns will help enhance the focal point of the accent wall

1. Cohesiveness: Pull from surrounding colors and choose a pattern that contains a similar palette, or that features one or more colors from neighboring walls or decor.

   In design, some may reference the 60-30-10 rule, which recommends:

   • The main color of the room should represent 60% of the space

   • The secondary color should represent 30% of the space

   • The accent color should represent 10% of the space

2. Mood: How do you want the room to feel? For a bedroom, you may want to choose darker, muted colors that create a cozy, relaxed space. Behind our RV upgrade

We spent the first 3 years of our RV life living in a 240-square-foot travel trailer. It was one of the most popular ‘couples coach’ floorplans and provided us with just the space we needed, but we had also put thousands of miles on it and we knew that we were nearing the end of its time.

In May of 2023, we decided to upgrade from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel. There are a few reasons why we made this decision, but overall the biggest benefit to us was the additional living space, and we were ready for something different. After many hours of online and in-person shopping, we ultimately purchased a 2023 Brinkley z3100 through General RV, using their online sales team to complete the deal.

6 things we had to do when picking up our new RV

While every RV shopping experience will vary, we are sharing 6 things that we had to do when we picked up our new RV. As full-time RVers who travel with two dogs, we made arrangements with the dealership in advance of delivery to allow ample time for moving, and to understand their onsite pet policy.

The more you can plan ahead for the day you pick up your new RV, the easier it can be for you and your family to start enjoying. We hope you find our experience to be helpful!

1 | Deliver the trade-in: We traded in our travel trailer, so this may not be something that you need to consider. Before arriving, we were provided with directions on where to pull our trade-in into. As part of the deal that we made using their online sales team, we also were prepared with how to handle some of the items that would be staying in the trade-in, vs. what we would take with us. As we pulled into the spot upon arrival, we were immediately greeted by a member of the team who informed us of what we needed to do.


2 | Install the hitch on the truck: Because we upgraded from a travel trailer to a fifth wheel, we also had to upgrade our hitch. We tow our RV with a 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500, and it was already equipped with the mounting points that are required to install a fifth-wheel hitch. The complexity of this step will vary depending on your tow vehicle, and overall they estimate about 4-5 hours. Because of this, they also take the truck back right away, to begin working on it.

3 | Walk-thru the new RV: While our trade-in was being assessed by the service team, and our truck was being prepped for the new hitch, it was at this point that we were greeted by the delivery team, to complete the walk-thru of our new RV. We were escorted out to the new unit, which was plugged in, cooled down, and ready to welcome us inside. During the walkthrough, it can be helpful to take video or photos of how to use any new functionality, or if you observe any damage, etc. Many new RV owners will also hire an RV inspector to join them in the walkthrough, to ensure there are no issues overlooked. Luckily for us, there was only one small issue of a broken blind, and the service team had already taken note of it.

4 | Complete financing: Once the walkthrough was completed, we moved on to financing. This part might not always be the most fun, and regardless of how prepared you are, it still tends to feel like it takes forever. Because we used the online sales team, we also worked with financing over the phone. We had our deal all ready to go, including the trade-in value, down payment, monthly payment, and interest rates. Depending on the amount of time that passes between the original deal and the date delivery is taken - rates could end up changing.

What we weren’t expecting …

To our surprise, the finance team had pulled our deal one more time before we took delivery, and they were actually able to find us better rates than we had expected. After crunching the numbers every which way to make this deal work for us, this was such a welcomed surprise!

5 | Meet the service team: Once financing was complete, we met with the service team. Here, we learned about the policies that are specific to their dealership, and they went over everything that we could expect, should we bring our RV in for service. During our financing, we also chose to add on ceramic coating, so the service team cared for that during this time as well.


6 | Get ready to move: While this step may not apply to everyone picking up their new RV, for us - it was the most bittersweet. We had to move. Since our trade-in was also our home, we had arranged in advance to stay the night in the parking lot. This particular dealer had 5-6 parking spots along the outer perimeter of their parking lot, each one with electric - however, they did not have water or sewer so you would need to plan ahead. This made our move so much easier because otherwise, we would have been trying to squeeze into a travel trailer with packed boxes all around us for the week or so leading up to the move.

By this time of the day, there is a lot of excitement. Our truck was pulled around with the new hitch in place and the service team did a walkthrough of how to use it, and then our new RV was also pulled around too. Such an exciting moment!

That night, we moved boxes for 3 to 4 hours straight, until we had our trade-in completely emptied. We did one last walkthrough together and put the stairs up and the handle in, one last time.

Overall, one thing that we can say for sure is that they have delivery down to a science. There were rarely any times that we were waiting on something to happen, and if we were - their team was super friendly, loving on our dogs, and checking in on us. On a day that can be a bit emotionally taxing, it’s important to know what to expect so you can plan ahead - especially if you will have kids or pets along with you.

RV Travel with Dog Fence

When we hit the road, the fence folds down to a pretty compact size and stores away in one of our outside compartments. With the additional panels that we purchased, we have 24 in total, 3 of them being gates. This gives us the flexibility to build out the fencing in many different ways, which is much needed when we stay at all types of campsites, big and small.

Since adding the dog fence to our campsite, Aska and Matilda have gained so much more freedom and are able to enjoy more of our campsite.

Weather permitting, we can leave the door open and let them run in and out of the RV, which is great for when we are working on projects or just hanging out. We also have a small pool and splash pad, so on hot days when they’re running around the site, they can cool down in the water.

One of the best parts is that just the other day, while I was outside with Matilda, we watched a young girl who was maybe 7 or 8, walking her large dog without a leash. Because we were inside our fence, I didn’t have to worry. If that had happened before, Matilda would have been out on a leash, and I would have been grabbing her to run inside, out of fear.

Our Personal Experience

You may or may not know that 3 years into our RV journey, we lost our 12-year-old Yorkie, Pita. He was tragically taken from us after being attacked by a dog who was newly fostered, and at the dog park for his first time.

Even though we care for and treat our dogs like they are our children, there are other irresponsible dog owners just around the corner. I am honestly shocked at the number of times we have seen off-leash dogs roaming campgrounds, or owners who just walk their dogs right up to ours, without asking permission or checking the vibe first.

Between experiencing the traumatic loss of Pita and a childhood fear of ‘big’ dogs resurfacing, I have been dealing with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. After many months of mourning, we decided to bring another dog into our lives. We all felt the hole in our hearts from the loss of Pita, and we knew that a companion was the best thing for Aska. I also hoped that this new addition would help me continue to heal, and in April 2023, we welcomed Matilda into our family.

Bringing a new puppy into our lives has been a whirlwind of emotions. She has brought so much love and light, but also many sleepless nights, too. We’ve had to adapt in many ways, from our day-to-day schedule, to putting things up and away to not be eaten, and all the things that come with puppy life. But the biggest change, and the one that I wasn’t fully prepared for, was how hard it would be to put myself back in those situations that cause me fear.

My senses are so heightened and constantly on the defense when it comes to unknown dogs. When I am walking Matilda, I can hear another dog’s leash from down the road. My entire body will freeze while I intently listen, waiting to see if it’s a loose dog. Or if their owner has them on a leash that’s too long. Or if they’re so rowdy that they might break free. If I see someone opening the door to their RV, I stop and wait, wondering if they have a dog that’s about to run out the door.

Because of these fears, unless I am walking with Eric, I can only walk with Matilda alone in spaces where I can clearly see the full landscape of what is happening. Obviously, this can be difficult when we are traveling to new places.

What’s With RV Wallpaper, Anyways?

If you’ve spent any amount of time researching or shopping around for an RV, you may have noticed that regardless of the make, model, or year that it was built, there is one very familiar element throughout … camper wallpaper. 

With an increasingly large number of people making the leap and preparing for full-time RV life, more people are wondering how to add some personality to a very blank, and usually textured, wall.

We recently sat down with Michelle Blosser, the Interior Design Manager for Grand Design RV, to talk all things RV design.

She was gracious enough to answer all of our questions on Instagram, including “what’s with RV wallpaper, anyways?”.  

Between our conversation with Michelle and our experience as full-time RVers, we’ve learned that it comes down to two basic reasons why most RV wallpaper is seemingly created the same: appeal and function. 

RV Wallpaper and Appealing to the Masses

Even with the growing number of full-time RVers inspiring new and trendy RV decor ideas, the fact of the matter is that RV manufacturers have the difficult task of creating a product that appeals to the masses.

Much like when you are listing a house for sale, it’s recommended that you paint the interior in very neutral tones to appeal to more buyers. RV manufacturers provide buyers with a similar neutral palette. 

There are so many technical nuances involved with building an RV that leave little room for customization. This means that most RVs you find for sale are going to have very similar palettes of greige, beige, and maybe even straight-up brown RV wallpaper. 

Camper Wallpaper - What’s it Hiding?

The other, very functional reason that camper wallpaper is very much the same across various makes and models is that it helps to hide imperfections.

Campers are built to be lightweight to promote safer towing options. With that, instead of finding traditional nails or other typical building materials, you will likely find more staples and glue. 

For this reason, textured RV wallpaper is ideal because it helps make it easy for the manufacturers to hide imperfections. 

Peel and Stick Wallpaper for RV Decor

The good news is that the consistent approach to RV wallpaper means you have a blank slate to truly personalize your space and turn your RV into your home.

A couple of options that you can consider when covering your RV wallpaper include: peel-and-stick tiles, paint, or peel-and-stick wallpaper.

So let’s talk peel and stick wallpaper pros and cons, so you can be better equipped to decide if it’s a good solution for your RV decorating needs.

Pros: Peel and Stick Wallpaper

It’s not forever: One of the most asked questions is “Does peel and stick wallpaper damage walls?” Here’s the thing – a quality paper that is installed correctly and maintained properly can eventually be removed without damage to the walls. This makes it a great option for RV owners who want to add some personality to their RV without making permanent changes that could affect the resale value. 

You can DIY it: Installing peel and stick can be a pretty easy job, depending on the room, corners, or cuts to be made, and with good quality paper and the right tools. 

You can purchase it online: There are many different companies offering peel-and-stick wallpaper beyond the big box stores, making it easy to find more options to be delivered to your home.

Many design options: Peel and stick has come a long way, offering on-trend options. Including classics, boho peel and stick wallpaper, and even art deco peel and stick wallpaper. The options are endless, and because it’s not permanent, you have more freedom to test out bold patterns without the fear of commitment.

Cons: Peel and Stick Wallpaper

It’s not forever: A quality peel-and-stick wallpaper should stand the test of time and even sometimes be easier to clean and maintain than traditional wallpaper. However, especially when using it as RV wallpaper, you are subjecting it to changing climates and increased wear and tear over using it in a setting like a house. For this reason, it may not last forever.  

You can DIY it: Hey, just because you CAN, doesn’t mean it’s always a good thing. Let me repeat, “Installing peel and stick wallpaper can be a pretty easy job, depending on the room, corners or cuts to be made, and with good quality paper and the right tools”. Well, have you been inside a camper to see how many corners and cuts you will be working with?  

You can purchase it online: The downside to purchasing it online is that what you see may not always be what you get. Due to natural variations in how colors are displayed on screens, you may end up with a design or color that was not what you had envisioned. Be sure to read the fine print, order samples if possible, and ensure the company offers a return policy. 

Many design options: The design options are plentiful, and with this, the price can vary significantly, and too many options can hinder decision-making. Another issue to be aware of is that with so many designs available, rolls of peel-and-stick wallpaper can be printed at different times, in different batches,  and this could lead to minor variations in the color or pattern. When hanging peel and stick that comes from different lots, you will likely see these variations. 

Overall, Peel and Stick Wallpaper Pros and Cons

The thing is, there are many pros and cons to using peel-and-stick for your RV wallpaper, and it will truly depend on your specific needs. Consider how you plan to use your RV. If you are going to leave it in inclement weather for long periods of time, it could impact how well your peel-and-stick wallpaper holds up. If you are unsure, you could start with an inexpensive option and test a small area too. 

Tips for Peel and Stick Wallpaper Installation in an RV

If you decide that peel-and-stick wallpaper is the right solution for your RV decor, we have a few tips for installation that we think will help. We’ve used peel-and-stick to cover the RV wallpaper in our own RV, and we’re sharing these tips based on our experience. 

There are a couple of differences when it comes to installing peel and stick in an RV versus in a house, because most RV walls are already covered with RV wallpaper that is not easy, or really recommended to remove. 

Can you wallpaper over wallpaper?

Typically, no. You would not want to wallpaper over wallpaper because it would not adhere to the wall and would be more susceptible to air bubbles, imperfections, etc. You really want to install peel-and-stick wallpaper over a clean, solid surface. Having said that, RV wallpaper is usually very thin and flat, and it makes it easier to install peel-and-stick over it. 

Peel and stick wallpaper on textured walls?

Again, this would typically be a no, and most peel-and-stick wallpaper manufacturers will also advise you against it. We previously mentioned that most RV wallpaper is textured, but it’s typically a very light texture that will still allow enough grip to successfully install a quality peel-and-stick over the RV wallpaper. 

Tips for Installing Peel and Stick Wallpaper in Your RV

1. When you receive the product, check to make sure the batch numbers all match so you know the coloring will be consistent

2. Let the wallpaper acclimate for at least 48 hours prior to planning installation

3. If you plan to install peel-and-stick wallpaper over painted RV walls, you will want to wait at least 2-4 weeks to allow the paint to fully cure

4. If you plan to install peel and stick over wallpaper RV walls, you should wipe them clean with warm water and allow to dry fully before installing

5. Gather tools: Exacto knife, scissors, ladder or stool, a plastic card, ruler, level, and tape measure

6. When installing peel and stick in an RV, you may want to consider removing the molding and window frames (depending on your RV make and model) and replacing them when the paper is complete. This will also help hold the paper more securely in place

To Install Peel and Stick Wallpaper in Your RV

1. You will typically work from left to right when hanging panels of any type of wallpaper. The exception to this rule is if you are installing a feature wall or a large-scale design, in which case you would want to start in the middle of the wall to create a focal point

2. To create a guide for your first strip, you can measure the width of the wallpaper and then measure that same width from the left-hand side of the wall. Using a level, draw a straight line down the length of the wall

3. Peel about 6-12 inches of the backing away from the paper and start to apply the paper from the left-hand corner over, leaving about 1-2 inches extra at the top

4. Using a plastic card, smooth the paper against the wall, moving from left to right 

5. The paper should align with the line that you drew, and this will help ensure the remaining strips are hung straight as well 

6. Reposition the paper as needed

7. Continue to peel 6-12 more inches of backing off at a time, working from top to bottom and left to right

8. As you work your way down the wall, you can start to apply more pressure with the plastic card, smoothing air bubbles out as you go

9. Once the strip is in place, use a utility knife to trim the excess paper from the top and along the bottom

10. When hanging the next strip, line up the pattern and overlap the paper by about .5mm to avoid gaps in the seam as the paper continues to cure and may shrink a small amount

11. Repeat until your wall is complete, and enjoy!

Morganton Point Campground is a North Georgia campground located on Lake Blue Ridge, in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

Settled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this campground is managed by Find Outdoors.

If you are longing for relaxing days by the water, mountain views without a windy, treacherous drive, and a true outdoorsy experience with private campsites for a little R&R - this is the place for you.

Note - it seems to be the place for a lot of folks these days and you’ll likely need to book ahead. Like … “Book in January to visit in July” - ahead. Or, “Why are you telling people about our favorite place” … ahead.

Morganton Point Campsites and Amenities

Morganton Point Campsites:

• A total of 43 sites, nestled in the lush woods surrounding Lake Blue Ridge

• 25 sites are equipped with 50/30 amp electric and water

• 2 double sites and 7 walk-in sites

• Most sites are very spacious and pretty private

Morganton Point Bathrooms:

• 2 bathhouses total

• Probably the cleanest we’ve seen at a campground

Amenities at Morganton Point:

• Lake Blue Ridge is a very active lake, offering all of the water activities you can dream of! Kayak, Canoe, Standup Paddle Board, Jet Ski, or float your Pontoon Boat

• The recreation area offers a picnic area with picnic tables by the beach area and you will also find a paved boat launch where you can make your way out onto the 3,290 acres of Lake Blue Ridge

• There is a small shop at the Morganton Point Recreation Area, to grab an ice cream and Kayak rental

What makes Morganton Point Campground such a special place are the campsites.

The sites are spacious and surrounded by lush greenery, with many of them waterfront, giving you water access and beautiful views of Lake Blue Ridge.

Details for some of the best Morganton Point Campsites that we’ve stayed in:

• Sites 4 and 5 are spacious and level, although access to the water is limited

• Site 6 is just simply beautiful, with plenty of space and amazing water access. You can bring all the water toys and never leave this site

• Site 7 is across from Site 6, making it a great option for bigger parties to split up. It has water access as well, but the placement of hook-ups means you will likely park your camper with the door facing away from the water and towards the road instead. It’s a great tent site with a step-down and level space

• Site 9 is a double site with beautiful views and lake access. Similar to Site 6, this is a favorite among many campers and can be difficult to book

• Site 11 is a tent-only, non-electric, hike-in site - with a tree-covered walkway back to amazing lake views and water access

• Site 13 is also a double site, and super spacious because you park your camper up top on the paved pathway, leaving the bottom level open for tents and activities. There is water access and a trail that connects to Site 14. Note, there are stairs or a bit of a grade to walk down to navigate from the camper parking area to the campsite/water

• Site 14 is tent only, non-electric however you can run an extension cord to Site #13 if your larger party is occupying both sites. This site is so spacious and has a walkway and access to the water

• Site 15 is a great option if you want to be close to the restrooms, but is not on the lakeside

Things to do in nearby Blue Ridge, GA

We first fell in love with Blue Ridge for its beautiful views and quaint downtown area.

Over the past couple of years, we have seen the population growing, seemingly with both residents and tourists alike and the downtown area is bustling as soon as shop doors open, with the parking lots filling quickly [Update: most parking lots downtown are now paid]

We recommend checking shop hours before heading out, as many shops close early and hours change seasonally. The busiest times are definitely over the weekends and during peak travel seasons.

If you’re planning on camping in the GA mountains, you’ll have plenty of options to check out.

A few of our favorite things to do when visiting the Blue Ridge, GA are:

Spend the day in Downtown Blue Ridge

Downtown Blue Ridge is a destination in itself. Walking down Main Street, you will pass outdoor goods stores, antique shops, gem stores, and boutique clothing stores. You will also see stores like the Blue Ridge Oil Co., and the local Knife Shop, where we love to stop in and say hello to the shop’s true manager - the cat wearing a dagger on his collar.

And don’t forget to make a stop at Huck’s General Store, where you can find souvenir t-shirts (they have more sizes in the back!) and fill up on all your favorite bulk candies and old-fashioned toys.

Misty Mountain Hops Vinyl Pub

One of our favorite places to grab a casual dinner is Misty Mountain Hops Vinyl Pub.

This locally owned spot is founded on the belief that “through music and food we can provide an establishment for people of all backgrounds, generations, and beliefs to come together and enjoy an enthusiastic experience of the community”

The menu boasts numerous unique options, and the atmosphere is chill with live music on a regular basis.

Day-trip-worthy things to do outside of Blue Ridge:

While Blue Ridge itself offers many activities, shopping, and dining experiences - there are also several attractions within a short day-trip.

Amicalola Falls: Just a 45-minute drive away, you can find yourself zip-lining through the forest, hiking trails, and walking to the beautiful falls. You’ll also find the Appalachian Trail approach for a fun photo, too.

Brasstown Bald: Within an hour's drive, you can view 4 states from the Observation Deck at the peak, hovering at an elevation of over 4,700 feet.

Living in an RV requires you to be a bit more creative with your approach to seasonal RV decor. The 7 ideas we’re sharing below will help you discover easy solutions to transform your RV decor for Fall. So let’s add a little bit of spice, shall we?

1. Pillows & Blankets: Are there cozier ways to incorporate Fall into your RV decor? I don’t think so.

   RV decorating ideas & tips: Use pillow forms with seasonal covers, so you can store just the covers in the off-season, vs. storing actual pillows. And instead of purchasing holiday-specific blankets, choose colors you can use throughout the year.

2. Garlands & Macramé: Fall garlands or macramé decor are great additions to your seasonal RV decor because they are typically lightweight and easy to hang. In a smaller space like an RV, a garland (or two!) will make a big impact on the overall space. Learn how to make Macramé Leaves in 10 easy steps.

6. Orange Slices: Making dried orange slices is one of my favorite ways to kick off the Fall and Winter seasons. Not only can you create your own wreaths, garlands, or wall hangings with dried orange slices, but the smells that fill your RV home through the process = chef’s kiss. Hang dried orange slices with rustic twine and adorn them with rosemary or thyme for an added touch.

7. Soaps & Lotion Dispensers: Beyond the visual elements of decor, nostalgic seasonal memories are heightened when you tap into all 5 senses. For this reason, I like to change out soaps and lotions with seasonal scents, while also updating dispensers displayed throughout our RV decor.

We have gathered all the knowledge we gained from seeking out our own travel trailer decorating ideas and divided it into four categories.

1. Camping Kitsch: Learn where to compromise between camping essentials and elements of home, with ideas on easy substitutions.

2. Textiles: A Comprehensive list of textiles that add warmth and softness to your RV interior. Plus, we include tips to help you incorporate these into your decor.

3. RV Bedding: What to avoid, and how to overcome the ‘notorious’ RV mattress.

4. Sentimental: Learn how to include personal items and other small RV decorating ideas with tips to make them travel-friendly.

These four categories include simple ideas that can be easily implemented. These ideas will greatly improve your RV and make it feel like home.

Are you ready to get started?

1 | Find Your Balance in “Camping Kitsch”

The temptation to purchase camping “everything” can be overwhelming when you first get an RV.

These types of items can be effective for specific camping situations, however:

• They were created to be durable for the outdoor lifestyle and not with the “comfort of home” in mind

• Aesthetically, they are limited in designs and colors

• And honestly, they’re also typically marked up and more expensive because they’re considered specialty items

It's not that you won't benefit from any of these items. In fact, you might come across some products that offer unexpected solutions.

The important thing is to strike a balance between specialized camping gear and items that enhance your comfort or style.

Options to consider instead, especially when shopping for your RV Kitchen:

• Instead of enamel campware, try melamine or bamboo plates. Both are great options and come in a variety of patterns, while still providing durability. You can shop our curated selection of RV-safe dishes, plus - find tips to help you choose the best RV dishes

• Instead of metal or plastic one-use cups, try acrylic drinkware. What we love about acrylic glasses is how well they stand up to the bumps of RV travel. Plus, they come in a variety of styles, colors, and sizes, so you can really find acrylic drinkware for almost any occasion

• Depending on the cabinet or counter space in your RV, consider using residential-sized small appliances vs “dorm” or camping appliances. Coffee makers, air-fryers, even stand mixers or a Sodastream can help you feel at home if that is what you are accustomed to

• When considering your needs, compromise on factors such as ease of use, weight, and desired aesthetic.

Enamel campware is a great option for outdoor dining, but it may not contribute to the feeling of “home” that you are looking for.

Melamine plates are lightweight, durable plastic, and can be found in a variety of patterns that add a touch of personalization to your space.

2 | Use Textiles to Create Warmth in Your RV

RVs are manufactured as recreational vehicles that are most often used to travel between outdoor destinations in the camping lifestyle.

For this reason, in its stock form with wall-to-wall vinyl, textured wallpaper, and lightweight countertops, the RV feels quite empty and cold.

One of the easiest ways to add warmth to your tiny space is by adding and layering textiles.

Textiles to consider when shopping for RV decorating ideas:

We are sharing a round-up of several different types of textiles to consider using to create warmth and a lived-in feeling.

Rugs

Not only will an area rug add visual warmth to RV interiors, but it will also keep your toes warm on chilly days.

Like blankets, throw pillows can be added to your couch, recliners, and backs of chairs for a pop of color and texture. Throw pillows are a great way to incorporate some unique RV decorating ideas because you can test out colors and styles without a long-term commitment.

Tip: Layered throw pillows in mixed shapes and sizes can make RV interiors feel less commercial and more homey.

Linen napkins

Available in a variety of styles and colors, linen napkins add a personal touch to even small spaces. Plus, linen napkins are more sustainable.

Tablecloth or Table Runner

A tablecloth or runner on your dining table adds a pop of color and softens the RV feel of an RV booth or smab

Turkish Towels

When cared for properly, these lightweight towels are a great addition to your RV Bathroom.

Not only are they more durable and absorbent than traditional bath towels, but they also come in many fun and trendy patterns.

Window Treatments

Curtains, bamboo blinds, or other window treatments not only create warmth and a sense of home, but they can also increase privacy in your RV living space.

Tip: Curtains can be a great addition to the blackout shades that most RVs come equipped with. When using bamboo blinds, consider upgrading to lined shades for increased privacy.

3 | RV Mattress Replacement and Bedding Upgrades are Key

It is essential to get a good night's sleep for our mental and physical health. This is even more critical when stepping out of our comfort zone, such as traveling to new destinations in an RV.

Upgrade your RV bedding to instantly make your RV feel more like home.

When purchasing a new RV, the manufacturers typically include a thin, basic, and uncomfortable mattress as part of the package. This is due to the challenge of accommodating every individual’s sleep preferences with a single mattress. Therefore, they expect you to upgrade to a more suitable option and provide a cost-effective starter mattress.

RV Mattress Upgrade

Most RVs are equipped to accommodate an RV Queen or RV King-sized mattress. RV mattress sizes are typically shorter than traditional mattress sizing.

Options to upgrade your RV mattress are plentiful, so you can choose one that best fits your needs, from a firm to a soft mattress.

Tip: When searching for replacement mattresses, first measure the mattress base to ensure an accurate fit. Using search terms like “short mattress” and “short queen/king” will help you find options.

Mattress Topper

If you're not looking to upgrade your RV mattress, consider adding a mattress topper instead. Foam toppers can be easily trimmed to fit shorter mattresses, and you can even personalize your sleeping experience with options like built-in cooling and adjustable firmness levels.

Bedding

To make your RV feel more like home, it's important not to compromise on bedding. You can easily incorporate the same bedding you use at home into your RV. If you prefer a down comforter for better sleep, you can definitely add one to your RV bed as well.

There are multiple sheet options available for RV mattresses that are specifically designed to fit their unique sizing. However, you can also use standard sheets by choosing a smaller size. For instance, we utilize full-size linen sheets for our RV queen mattress and find them to be incredibly comfortable.

4 | Personalize Your RV with Sentimental Items

When it comes to making your RV feel like a home, one of the most effective ways to enhance your environment is by incorporating personal items.

And, there’s a reason why:

According to psychologist Sam Gosling, we can organize the things in our homes into categories. “The first (category), is identity claims. Photographs, music records, the art we choose — these are the items that we believe represent our values.” Gosling says.

Because our desire to be understood is one of our most prioritized subconscious needs, we decorate our homes to reflect our true ‘self’.

Incorporating sentimental items into your RV can truly make it feel like a home.

When it comes to personal belongings and sentimental items, everyone has their own preferences. However, we can offer some suggestions on which categories to consider. Additionally, we will provide tips on how to handle these items in an RV.

Ideas to consider when choosing sentimental items for your RV:

Photographs and Art

Hang artwork and picture frames in your RV using Command Strips. Removable velcro strips like these are a great way to hang wall decor without making holes in RV walls.

Tip: When installing art, or even a gallery wall, you can make frames lightweight by completely removing the glass or replacing it with acrylic.

Music

Having a Bluetooth speaker to play your favorite tunes, whether inside your RV or outside by the campfire, is an excellent way to feel connected to your surroundings.

Additionally, showcasing a record player and a collection of vinyl records not only allows you to enjoy music but also adds visual appeal to your space.

Keepsakes

When it comes to deciding which keepsakes to bring on your RV adventure, only you can determine what truly makes sense. However, it's important to remember that unexpected bumps in the road can happen during travel days, no matter how well you pack things away in your RV.

Plants + Fresh Cut Flowers

Most house plants increase air quality, which is vital in small spaces. Displaying plants or vases of flowers can help you connect to your space as a home.

Tip: If you are short on counter space, you can hang plants using peel-and-stick Command Hooks or a tension pole with ‘s’ hooks.

Wall Decor

RV walls can feel sterile and cold.

When we sat down with Michelle Blosser, the Interior Design Manager for Grand Design RV, we learned the “why” behind the reason most RV walls are the same. Spoiler alert: it has to do with necessity and hiding staple marks from the installation. We also talked RV decor at length and shared it all as part of our peel-and-stick wallpaper blog post.

Back to wall decor. Because RV walls can feel a bit plain, wall decor is a great way to add warmth and dimension, even in small spaces.

Example Wall Decor ideas to consider:

Tapestries: Lightweight and travel well. They are available in many different designs and styles and are very versatile. They can be used as tablecloths, privacy screens, or simply as wall decor. Use Command Strips to hang tapestries in your RV.

Macramé: Also lightweight, macramé wall hangings can easily be hung with Command Hooks. Macramé decor can range in price, or if you prefer DIY projects, you can make your own.

String Lights: Create a cozy ambiance by hanging string lights throughout your RV decor. They’re lightweight, store easily, and can also be hung with Command Hooks.

Overall, when it comes to keepsake items and most other ‘extras’, compromise when needed.

Especially if you plan to be RV living full time, bring the things that are most important to you.

If they bring you great joy, you won’t regret making the space in your RV.

How to Make Your RV Feel Like Home

Can I share a funny story before we jump into RV bathroom storage ideas? Once upon a time, Eric talked me into camping in a tent.

Me. In a tent.

It was a small tent that required crouching down to get dressed. A small tent that I can still very clearly recall the morning when I was sitting cross-legged on an air mattress, balancing my compact mirror on my knee while trying to apply eyeliner. It was not pretty.

Let’s just say that we upgraded to our first camper shortly after. When we became full-time RVers, I quickly realized that if I was going to move into an RV with all of my eyeliner – I was going to have to tackle the RV bathroom storage situation.

Consider this before starting your RV Bathroom organization

Before jumping into start organizing an RV, there are two key questions that can help guide your approach and the overall outcome of your project.

1. How do you use your RV? 
   Before you determine how to organize your RV bathroom, consider how your RV will be used. Are you a recreational camper or, are you full-time RV living? If you are using it recreationally, you will likely be packing and unpacking some items more often than not, and if you are living in your RV full-time, you may have more products that require storage.

2. Aesthetics vs. Functionality (or both)
   Stick with me here, because if you have watched even one episode of The Home Edit on Netflix, you would know that you can indeed have both.

Typically, our experience has been that when seeking out RV storage solutions, the approach that is most often recommended is usually ‘functional first’. But it does not have to be that way if you don’t want it to be. With little effort, it is becoming easier to find functional and aesthetic RV storage solutions.

So consider how you will use your RV bathroom and if it is important to you to incorporate design and aesthetics, or if you are looking for the most functional and space-saving storage options.

7 essential ways to tackle organization

When you are ready to start organizing your space, it can at first feel a bit overwhelming. Following these seven tips can help you make incremental progress in your RV bathroom storage organization.

1. Evaluate the space you are working with: Are there opportunities to optimize the space that you’re working in? For example, RV bathrooms can sometimes have very deep cabinets with space that goes unused at the back. There also may be space to utilize that is above or below other cabinets or cubbies. Take a full inventory of the nooks and crannies where you may be able to fit storage.

2. Remove everything from the space: Starting with a clean slate can help you gain a fresh perspective. Remove current items from your RV bathroom, and compile everything that you will need to organize and store.

3. Declutter and eliminate any outdated or unused items: In your first pass, remove items that have gone unused or that may have expired. (Tip: take note of any items that may need to be replaced as you go)

4. Sort items into categories: To help you visualize how items will be stored, start grouping them into like categories. For the sake of RV bathroom organization, categories might include: Skincare routine, Hair products, Medication/First Aid, or even morning routine vs. evening.

5. Clean and touch up: While you have a clean, empty slate - this is the perfect opportunity to do a deep clean of your space. You can also touch up paint, or even hang peel-and-stick wallpaper or other accents.

6. Measure. (And then measure again.) Take measurements of each space that you identified as potential storage. I recommend also taking photos of each space, writing down a description, and the potential use (for example: makeup or cleaning products), along with the measurements, for each one. This way you can reference all of this together when shopping for RV bathroom storage solutions.

7. Play Tetris! OK, well, first - shop for your RV storage containers and then play Tetris to test out different options for organizing the containers and items within them. Allow yourself time to test out various arrangements and options, making tweaks as you continue to use your space.

Wondering why you need a checklist to tear down your RV? Well, let me tell you a little story about how we left $400 sitting on a tire and didn’t remember until we were miles down the road, and it was long gone.

OK, maybe it wasn’t a pile of cash, but it was our TPMS system that retails for over $400, and it was left sitting on the tire … and it is long gone.

Even the most organized and experienced person can make a mistake, and that is where a checklist can save you from making one of your own, big or small.

When we first embarked on our RV adventures, we did not have an RV departure checklist of our own. We had seen several but we had it in our minds that we needed to get a few trips under our belt to really know what to look for in a checklist or to see if it would be applicable.

Here we are, almost 2 years later and we are finally putting pen to paper to create a checklist – not only for ourselves but for you too!

How to make RV departure day easy

First, we highly recommend that you print out a checklist - whether it’s ours or another one. A checklist will help to keep you on track, will force you to double-check your work, and will make your tear-down process easier and safer.

3 tips to help you prepare for a successful RV travel day

1 | Plan Ahead - Route Planning

The night before your travel day, review your route and make a plan for what time you will want to leave the campground by.

Work backward from that target time, and create a schedule of what time you will need to wake up, what time you will need to start tear-down, and what time you will plan to be on the road.

Having this time in mind is a great way to timebox the tasks that you need to complete in order to tear down your RV safely, and will help you to avoid the last-minute rush, which is more likely to lead to making a mistake.

2 | Plan Ahead - Task Ownership

Before you tear down your RV and campsite, it can be really helpful to create a plan to decide who will own what tasks.

Divvy up the tasks that need to be completed so you each have a sense of what you will focus on to help move the work forward.

TIP: After you become comfortable with your part in the process, it is vital to cross-train each other. Learning how to do every aspect of the process is so important, in case something should happen and one of you needs to step in.

(And it can be a relationship saver by having an understanding of what your partner is doing!)

3 | Plan Ahead - Head Start

Get a head start on the teardown process in the days leading up to your departure. Here are some of the things that you could consider packing up the day before: grill, outdoor furniture, outdoor rugs, and any wall hangings or decor.

You can also clean and tidy up the RV, wash dishes, and put things away that you won’t be using. Having these few things already done and out of the way will make your teardown and travel day run that much more smoothly.

Did you notice a trend? It all comes down to planning ahead.

Waiting until the last minute to do anything opens you up to making mistakes, and when it comes to the RV lifestyle, mistakes can be dangerous. This is also why it is so important to have good systems in place to ensure you don’t miss any tasks!

Here's how to tear down your RV for a Travel Day

Whether you are an RV newbie or you are getting your RV ready to depart on your 100th trip, we can all use a refresher on the tasks required to tear down for travel day.

What's on your RV departure list?

Here are the basic tasks that you will need to complete in preparation for your departure. We recommend printing out our checklist and doing a walk-around to validate that it includes everything needed to safely tear down your RV, as models vary and your needs may be different.

Basic tasks needed to tear down your RV for a travel day

Inside Your RV

• Tidy up, wipe down, and dust surfaces

• Close all vents, windows, and blinds/curtains

• Sweep / vacuum/mop floors, under slides

• Check all cupboards and drawers for security

• Tie back or secure interior doors

• Secure TV and other electronics

• Secure wall hangings and decor

• Turn off the AC / heat

• Turn off the water pump and water heater

• Turn off lights, radio, fireplace, etc.

• Empty waste bins

• Secure the shower head and door

• Secure shower products

• Drain water from the faucet if emptying the tanks

• Add toilet treatment

• Pack the refrigerator and turn off / travel power

Preparing for Full-Time RV Life

We’ve been married for over 20 years and have been living in our RV full-time since July 2020. Before becoming full-time RVers, we raised 3 children and worked traditional 9-5 jobs while building ‘the American dream’. 

In the last 3+ years, we have lived both as stationary RVers and as nomadic travelers, exploring the U.S. along with our 2 dogs. 

Along the way, we’ve learned how to navigate our new normal. We have adapted the foundation of our relationship to acclimate to an entirely different way of living, and in much smaller surroundings.

We recognize that there were opportunities for us to have better prepared our relationship for RV life, while celebrating unexpected revelations and growth that was inspired by our new way of living. 

Together, we’ve developed what we believe to be the 4 essential steps to encourage success, and to help you survive and THRIVE in the RV lifestyle, together.

#1 Align On The Expectations You Have For The RV Lifestyle

For most people, full-time RV living is likely a change from their normal life. And, it’s also likely to involve several months or even years of planning. 

The earlier in the planning process that you have the conversation around your expectations, the better your outcome will be, but like we said – it is never too late!

Beyond the Pros and Cons of RV Living: Where You Need to be Aligned

Here are the key areas where you will want to align on expectations:

• What are you looking to get out of this lifestyle?

• What will your lifestyle look like? 

• What differences can I expect from living in an RV versus a house?

What are you looking to get out of this lifestyle?

Above all, what is your North Star of RV living? Are you making the leap because it’s a bucket list item that you want to fulfill, or are you hoping to gain financial independence from downsizing your financial footprint? 

There are many reasons why couples decide to explore full-time RV living, and they vary significantly. 

Without clear guidance, your actions could completely derail your ability to meet these goals.

What will your lifestyle look like? Will you be stationary or traveling? If you are planning to travel, how often will you change locations?

To travel, or not to travel, that is the question. However, there is no wrong answer … as long as it’s mutually decided. 

Both styles of full-time RV living can be exciting, and both have their pros and cons. 

They are also so wildly different that it would be similar to deciding to relocate your family to another state without asking your partner.

What differences can I expect from living in an RV versus a house?

Aside from the obvious answer that your new home will roll …

All jokes aside, transitioning to full-time RV living can disrupt what you have created as your “household norms”. 

For example, when we became full-time RVers, it allowed Eric the opportunity to retire. We had to adjust to not only living together in an RV, but also to a new schedule, more time together, and an interruption in our household norms. Who does the dishes? Who starts the coffee? Is that coffee pot REALLY clean after they washed it?

And even if your move to full-time RV living comes without changes to work or schedules, it will likely still surface pet peeves that you may not have previously noticed or simply overlooked in a larger house. 

Your surroundings are much smaller, and the spots of dirt may appear much larger.  

A simple conversation to align on the changes you may expect in your household norms and even “what does clean mean to you?”, could save future blow-ups that would otherwise likely be much to do about nothing.

#2 Build Routines to Help Plan for Full-Time RV Living

RV life can be hectic. 

Even if you are living in a stationary site, you can still tend to lose some sense of stability that can come from living in a traditional house. Full-time RV living opens the doors to adventure while also exposing you to new challenges and unexpected obstacles. 

Establishing foundational routines can help you to be better prepared to handle such moments of instability. 

(And no, we aren’t talking about stabilizing jacks.)

Preparing for full-time RV living through routines

Here are some aspects of routines that you may want to consider building:

• What type of schedule should you maintain in an RV?

• What is your day-to-day life like when full-time RV living? 

• How will you feel fulfilled? 

What type of schedule should you maintain in an RV?

This is especially important if one or both of you will be working, or if you have pets, children, or other varied needs. 

The difference between a schedule in a house and a schedule in an RV is that you can more easily be affected by things like inclement weather, travel days, noisy neighbors, reduced resources, or mechanical problems.

Consider how each of these could affect things like your work meetings or a homeschooling schedule, and create a backup plan. 

Most importantly, maintain transparency into changes to the schedule so you can best accommodate your partner’s needs and avoid those last-minute changes that contribute to a hectic environment.

What is your day-to-day life like when you are full-time RV living?

Another part of your foundational routine should be built around your personal wants and needs. 

If you are moving into an RV expecting that your spouse will want to sit fireside, making s’mores with you every night, you could be left disappointed. What makes you feel fulfilled today, and how will that change when you live in an RV?

We are very split in that Eric loves to be outdoors, and I prefer to be indoors. 

When we lived in our house, this wasn’t an issue because we lived a lifestyle that just had us inside most nights. Now that we live in campgrounds, Eric prefers to be outside by the campfire. 

This brings us to the next point:

How will you feel fulfilled?

If Eric waited around for me to come to sit by the fire with him, he would rarely enjoy the environment that he loves most. 

On the other hand, I can find satisfaction in catching up with my favorite show (and possibly writing a blog) while he enjoys the outdoors. 

And don’t worry, we do plenty of both together too, and it makes us enjoy those moments that much more!

Consider how your likes and dislikes line up, and how you imagine spending time together as RVers. Are there activities that you can always do on your own to help you feel fulfilled?

#3 Recognize and Praise Growth in Your Partner

This may seem obvious, and you might question how this is any different when you’re full-time RV living versus a traditional house. 

The answer is that when you live in an RV, you are constantly faced with new or challenging situations. I am not trying to scare you into thinking that RV living is scary or problematic, but it is very different.

From planning a travel route to packing up and moving your home, to the unexpected flat tire or campsite filled with bugs … you will most likely face situations that you had not dealt with, or at least not as frequently dealt with, in the past.

Preparing for full-time RV living through routines

What are some of the ways you can strengthen the bond with your partner?

• Identify the strengths that each of you will bring to the RV lifestyle

• Celebrate personal growth experienced through full-time RV living

• Prepare for moments without strength 

Identifying the strengths that each of you will bring to the RV lifestyle

Recognizing the strengths (and weaknesses, too!) that each of you will bring to the RV lifestyle will help you to align your mission together. 

There are more intricate tasks that may be outside of your normal routine, and determining how you can divide these responsibilities in advance will create a sense of ownership and synergy.

One simple example of this is planning who will own what tasks on travel days. 

For us, Eric cares for the outdoor duties like emptying the tanks and dialing in the hitch, while I organize and pack away everything inside. 

Another example would be when Eric and I tackled a couple of larger projects in the RV recently. I used my skill set to plan and design the project, while Eric did troubleshooting to determine how we would reroute electricity to make our project possible.

These are just two personal examples, but in each situation, the outcome would have been impacted significantly without our individual contributions. Knowing where you will add the most value to your new life together can help you align on key tasks and expectations in advance. 

Celebrate personal growth experienced through full-time RV living

Wait, are you saying I will still experience personal growth in tiny living? Yes, and the answer is … quite a lot. 

But what you do with it is more important. 

One of the most impactful ways that you can strengthen the bond with your partner is by recognizing and praising moments of personal growth. This is especially important when you are faced with new or stressful challenges.

For example, when we experienced a tire blowout on the side of I-95, the first thing that we did was go into problem-solving mode. Eric immediately began sourcing tools and assessing the damage, while I began researching tire shops nearby and keeping the dogs calm inside the truck.

We used our skills to divide and conquer a situation that we had not previously been through together. 

But we didn’t stop there. 

Once we had the tire replaced and we were safely back on the road, we took time to praise each other for how we contributed to the overall outcome. 

We recognized that without Eric’s skills – I would have been on the side of the road still. Without my skills, Eric would not have been able to apply a temporary fix to get us to the tire shop. 

Simply put, positive behavior that is positively recognized is repeated. Praising your partner’s personal growth encourages a healthy response to learning and trying new things.  

Prepare for moments without strength

Will it happen? Maybe. 

Regardless of how far in advance you prepare, how you divvy up tasks or how enthusiastically you praise each other, there may come a time when you are faced with such significant challenges that ,strength or no strength, you just aren’t equipped to handle it. 

You’re scaring me, Jen. 

Here’s the thing. The stronger you build your foundation as a couple, the more grace you’ll be able to give to these challenging situations. 

For example, we both were down and out with an illness and had zero strength left in us. It took everything that we had to care for each other until we got through it. 

We relied on the foundation that we built. We had clear insight into the tasks that each of us had been doing, so we could chip in to help out. We recognized each other for pulling ourselves together to care for each other. We essentially dug into each of these principles and applied them together to carry us forward. 

They always say to have a back-up plan, and in the RV life, that sits on top of your foundation, so build it strong. 

#4 Conflict Resolution - Bigger in Tiny Living

When all else fails, at least resolve it.

Full-time RV living leaves you very little room to hide anything, and only amplifies issues when they arise. Over the past year, this is one of the areas where we saw the most change in how we handled conflict resolution while living in an RV versus in a traditional house.

What are the key aspects to help resolve conflict, and some of the ways you can strengthen the bond with your partner?

• Create transparency to reduce conflict 

• Respect the changing environment of RV living

• But always speak up

It might surprise you that even when you live in a tiny footprint, it still may not be apparent when your partner is struggling or upset. 

It makes it even more important to surface concerns as they arise, creating transparency into what challenges you are facing and what you need from your partner. 

Respect the changing environment of RV living

It is incredibly important to address conflict in a timely manner to avoid escalation. However, with all of the new and different tasks that you will experience as part of RV living, you also need to recognize the right time to discuss issues. 

For example, we’d avoid teardown time on a travel day or when you are in the middle of a tense project. 

A good compromise is to come to an understanding in advance that you will pause conflict during these tense situations, or during activities that directly impact your safety (like hitching up the RV).

Instead, a great best practice is to create regular opportunities to download and discuss things together.

For us, we created a routine where we take a walk alone together every other night. No dogs and no distractions, just the two of us. It gives us the forum to share what’s on our minds and creates an environment of active listening.

But always speak up

On the other hand, we’ve mentioned several times how many new tasks you will be involved in when it comes to full-time RV living. 

It is imperative that you maintain focus to ensure you are operating in a safe environment and encourage your partner to speak up if they see something amiss.

For example, while setting up I recognized that Eric was about to do one step in front of another when they should have been flipped. I mentioned it to him, and at first, he didn’t recognize the issue. 

Instead of ignoring it and assuming he knew what was happening, I asked Eric to pause and run through it with me. 

Pausing the progress of work helped ensure that I didn’t let him make a mistake if that is where he was headed, and gave us the time to align on what we were seeing and how to progress.

We share this example because in these moments is usually when tensions are usually already high, and it can be easy to dismiss your partner or confuse the second look as an “attack”. 

You can create an environment of positive intent by acknowledging together in advance that these types of reminders come from a place of safety and encourage each other to always speak up. 

YES! You CAN Survive and Thrive RV Life Together

Putting our four essential tips into action will help you prepare your relationship for the lifestyle change that comes with RV living. It absolutely is possible to survive the RV life together, and by cultivating a healthy environment to promote growth and understanding, your relationship can truly THRIVE.

Let me get to the point. We’ve been there. Our travel trailer was on order, and we were patiently counting down the days until we got to pick it up and start our RVing adventures.

We immersed ourselves in YouTube videos and blogs - reading everything that we could find about what we would need to buy. Do you need a gas fire pit? A collection of cast iron? 10 RV Essentials: The camper Trailer must-haves you need and why

#1 Sewer hose - tops the list of must-haves for your camper

This is the hose that you will use to connect the holding tanks on your RV camper to the sewer hookup, either at your campsite or at the dump station. This is a pretty basic item, and you will likely find some options at varying lengths and price points. One thing to consider is that in some parks, you may need a longer connection depending on the campsite layout.

#2 Chocks 

These wedge-shaped blocks are placed on each side of the wheels on your RV camper to prevent it from moving.

These are absolutely essential items to ensure you are using your RV in the safest manner and will be the first things you put out and the last things you pick up on every trip.

You can find these in varying quality and price points.

Basic chocks will wedge between the wheel and ground, while the Andersen set gives you a bit more control over leveling while chocking, as you can drive your RV wheels right up onto the leveling chocks - allowing you to adjust by up to 4”.

#3 Leveling Blocks - the camper trailer must-haves to level in your site

Leveling blocks are used by placing them under your tongue jack and stabilizer jacks to help make your RV camper sit level, while also protecting the surface.

Not only will these make it easier for you to level your RV camper safely, but some campgrounds require you to use them to avoid damaging concrete pads.

There are several options to consider - varying in price and use. Andersen makes larger blocks that are taller and require fewer, while Camco makes stackable thin blocks that make it easier to customize your result.

#4 Drinking Water hose - an RV essential

There are a couple of options to consider when purchasing your drinking water hose, but the Zero G comes highly recommended. It’s lightweight and kink-free - making it an ideal option for camping use.

You will connect this from the water source to the city water connection on your RV, providing water to your sinks, shower, and toilet, and filling your fresh water tank if you plan on dry camping.

If you choose a different hose, you will want to make sure it is drinking water safe. Similar to your sewer hose, you will want to consider the length of your drinking water hose to ensure it’s long enough for varying campsite sizes and layouts.

This is going to give you more control over the water pressure going into your RV, and it’s important because it can vary from park to park - possibly causing damage if the pressure is too high. You will connect this somewhere between the city water connection and the water source, with personal preferences being varied.

#6 Hose Saver (Elbow) - another RV essential item

This may not seem like an absolutely essential item, but it helps to protect the water connection on your camper and reduces wear and tear on your hose. This will attach between your city water connection on your RV and your drinking water hose, allowing the hose to hang at a more relaxed angle.

#7 Water filtration - don't overlook this on your list of must-haves for your camper

Are you seeing a theme with water? You have several options when it comes to how you choose to filter your water, but it is highly recommended that, at a minimum, you utilize an in-line water filter. This will help to reduce possible sediment from making its way into your freshwater tanks, pipes, and heck, even your cups.

We started with the basic Camco in-line filter and then used a filtered pitcher for drinking water.

We recently upgraded to the ClearSource filtration system for improved quality with their Three-Stage Filtering.

#8 Black Water Tank Flush Hose - yes, you need another hose

Look - you don’t want to use the same hose to transport your clean drinking water into the rig, to turn around and connect it to the Black Water Tank Flush.

I promise. Buy the second hose.

This one will connect from the water source to the Black Water Tank Flush that sprays clean the inside of your black tank. You can really use any general garden hose for this purpose.

#9 Surge Protector - protect your RV with this important camper trailer must-have

Similar to the differences you will see in water pressure from campground to campground - you may also experience surges in electricity. This can be concerning when you are powering your entire RV through a power cord and you have no control over the flow of energy.

A surge protector will protect your RV against high voltage, and with some more advanced models can be controlled by user settings including low voltage regulation.

#10 Dogbone RV Electrical Adapter - don't leave home without it

Standard RV camper electrical systems are run on either 30 amps or 50 amps, meaning the plug on the power cord that runs your camper will be one of two sizes, running one or the other amperage.

You will need to plug a 30 amp plug into a 30 amp outlet, and a 50 amp to a 50 amp.

Typically, when you travel to a campground, the outlet on the pedestal will be a 30-amp outlet, but some will have both 30-amp and 50-amp outlets. This is important to know to understand why you might need this, and more importantly, to understand what option you need.

Note: When reducing amps, you may not be able to run as much power as normal
For example, if you have 2 AC units, you would likely only be able to run one
